On the Red Carpet | The Met Costume Institute Gala 2012

On May 8, 2012, the prestigious Metropolitan Gala at the Costume Institute was taking place in New York. A veritable celebration of fashion, the Met Gala is to fashion what the Academy Awards are to movies. In fact, it has been nicknamed the “Oscars of the East Coast” and this year celebrates the opening of the Metropolitan Museum fashion exhibit: Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

Organized by the Ultimate Queen of fashion and her empire Vogue, Anna Wintour has invited an always impressive list of guests. Beyoncé, Diane Von Furstenberg, Cate Blanchett, Mick Jagger, Heidi Klum, and Marc Jacobs were only few of the celebrities attending the event. Even more exciting was the extravagant styles and dresses spotted on the Red Carpet. Lace, hues of purple, color and peplum were a plenty as well as the feathers, the low cut backs and the metallic fabrics, MRD’s favorite trends for the night.

Keep reading to find out MRD’s 5 best picks!

1. Karolina Kurkova: Crystal sparkles
The custom-made dress by Rachel Zoe for Karolina Kurkova is our absolute favorite…WOW! The rose gold sequin gown with a dangerously elegant open-back and coordinating turban exhibit a dramatic look directly from the 20s! The supermodel took all of the red carpet’s attention when she walked with the bold and beautiful confection.

2. Jessica Alba: The golden girl
Jessica Alba surely never looked more chic with her Michael Kors metallic gown. Perfectly matching her golden skin tone, this is the absolute color for her. Her side-swept hair, which she said was inspired by Elsa Schiaparelli’s signature asymmetrical look, added to the complete style.

3. Christina Ricci: A true gift for the eyes
Christina Ricci is well-known for pulling off the most eyes-catching look years after years at the Met Gala. This year is no exception with her sweeping gown designed by Thakoon. In addition to the detailed black lattice-style dress, the asymmetrical cream neckline which was ruffled in a sculptured way across her chest and joined up with a giant bow at the back was gorgeous! Fashion tip: When wearing a dress with bold features like blend of textures and fabrics, bold accessories like this bow or multilayered dress, always accessorize with minimal and neutral jewels, shoes, and clutches. The dress should remain the only eye-catching element of your outfit.

4. Gisele Bündchen: Black-tie party
Gisele Bündchen looked ravishing in a Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci black sequin dress. Sparkle, front zip along with the leg-baring silhouette (perhaps you remember Angelina Jolie at the Oscar night!), we would like to give a special mention for Gisele’s best looking accessory: her famous quarterback husband, Tom Brady!

5. Renée Zellweger: Breathtaking silk gown
The custom-made Emilio Pucci by Peter Dundas’ dress for Renée Zellweger was breathtaking! The long sleeve silk gown featured sheer chiffon details, an organza train and a sexy open back. The golden accents on torso accentuated perfectly her flawless figure and made her look polished.
